DOES YOUR JEANS AFFECT THE WELL-BEING OF THE EARTH? WHAT ARE ECOLOGICAL JEANS?

"Many of us wear jeans every day, but demand for affordable fast fashion jeans has increased. Do we ever wonder what the consequences of buying cheap jeans will be or, how could making even small changes have a positive impact on the environment and the people who made clothes?"

The cotton industry is one of the world's largest industries and the manufacture of jeans is one of the largest uses of the cotton industry. The cotton field requires a lot of water and care in the form of various pesticides and chemicals, making it one of the most water-consuming and polluting industries on earth.

DID YOU KNOW THESE FACTS ABOUT MAKING JEANS?

1. It takes about 35% of the world's cotton production to manufacture denim fabrics. 70% of all this cotton production takes place in the United States, China, India and Pakistan - that is, mainly in low-cost countries. So there's a lot of jeans being made and bought.
2. In two major low-cost producing countries, India and China, up to 120 trillion litres, or 120 000 000 000 000 000 000 litres, are used to produce new jeans each year.

And unfortunately, the story doesn't end here yet...

THE JOURNEY OF JEANS FROM COTTON TO PRE-JEANS INCLUDES STEPS THAT ARE DETRIMENTAL TO THE ENVIRONMENT AND PEOPLE

The manufacture of jeans in low-cost countries causes people cramped and dangerous working conditions, long overtime days and toxic damage caused by the waxing and wear of jeans. Indigo dyeing and various surface treatments, such as wear on jeans, require the use of toxic chemicals. The most harmful is the waxing process of jeans, which requires a large amount of water and at the same time is dangerous for people who are in contact with the chemicals needed for bleaching.
.

The cheaper the jeans, the worse the manufacturing conditions. When buying jeans, you should carefully familiarise yourself with the factors behind the jeans. Do you know in which country the jeans you are wearing at the moment are made?

DID YOU KNOW THAT MAKING NEW JEANS ALONE CONSUMES OVER 10,000 LITERS OF PURE DRINKING WATER?

This amount of water corresponds to three months' showers or 17 years of drinking water for one person. Cotton is one of the most common ingredients in our clothing, but at the same time one of the world's largest water consumers. Are you part of the problem or the problem solver? How can you make a difference?

CHECKLIST - PREFER MORE ECOLOGICAL CLOTHING CHOICES AND JEANS:

- Check the materials: prefer recyclable, durable, ethical and responsibly produced denim products. You save clear money by investing in the quality, repairability and care of the garment.

- Buy products produced nearby. In this case, the carbon footprint of the products decreases.

- Know who made your clothes. Ethics are a big part of the responsible clothing industry.

- Read and study the clothing care instructions carefully. Wash your jeans as little as possible. When washing, wash the stains locally and in their masts at 30 degrees. Dry the jeans horizontally and they will last longer.

Do not throw away broken jeans, but recycle, repair or donate them to charity. Even if your clothes are no longer usable, a lot of its material is.

CHEAP PRODUCTION

- In a low-cost situation, there is talk of an "irresponsible clothing industry"

- "Cheap clothing is easy to buy but just as easy to throw away. In addition, the care of clothes is easy to neglect" - All work that has threatened human health

and the care of a cotton field and the water it needs is quickly wasted. At the same time, more waste accumulates, the environment pollutes, heats up and the greenhouse accelerates.
